I confronted a friend who had called the police on a black man in a situation which, at least to me, seemed non-threatening. I asked her whether she would have done the same thing if he were white. I got a lot of blow-back, and I may have lost the friend. At the time, it seemed like the right thing to do, and I still hope it was. Either way, it did take a tremendous amount of courage on my part.
